What's
Going On Here? Allan Chasanoff ’61 likes pictures that are hard to figure out. In the 1980s and '90s, he assembled a vast collection of photographs that are visually confusing, at least on first look. Through January 4, the Yale University Art Gallery is exhibiting more than 200 images that Chasanoff collected. This one was taken by Lee Friedlander in 1964. Friedlander used the hanging strings of beads, says curator Joshua Chuang, to create a “disorienting pattern of light, shadow, and texture that challenges our ability to take in the entire picture at once.” |
